Summer Fashion Tips For Men
What You Need To Know
Wearing black is a mindless choice because it requires no effort. Thus, choose color instead.
Stand out from the crowd by wearing a signature piece: a vintage watch, an item from your travels.
Flip-flops should never be worn in the city. Ever.
Choose color over black
Wearing black is a mindless choice because it requires little effort -- I mean, come on, how can you f*ck up wearing black? But you can go wrong wearing color. That's why this style tip works on two levels: (1) Your selection in color will silently broadcast your ability to, well, coordinate things so they look good (Not sure how? Check out my guide on color coordination), and (2) it will show that you've transitioned your wardrobe for warmer days -- nothing says holding on to the angst of winter like a black suit worn in July.
Tip: Try a pair of tangerine-color socks with a navy suit to the office, or substitute your go-to black jeans with white ones.
Lighten your fabrics up
How many men have I seen boarding the train in the summer with sweat dripping from their foreheads, wet armpits and stanking up the cart with their B.O.? Enough to warrant this entry. A lot of men carry over their heavier weight suits into summer because few consciously schedule a formal rotation. At some point this month, put away your flannels and tweeds, and start putting the linens and seersuckers front and center (assuming you own them).
Tip: Linen breathes well and, contrary to popular belief, isn't as unkempt-looking as it once was. You can even find suits that are, well, suitable. Invest in a blazer to begin or the whole summer suit if you're game.
Find a signature piece
Unlike women, who have an unlimited choice of clothing options in the summer, guys are restricted to either pants or shorts -- which, hey, isn't necessarily a bad thing. But looking like every other dude in a pair of shorts, flip-flops and a polo isn't going to do much for you.
Tip: Instead, find one thing that will become your signature look for the summer: Maybe it's a vintage dive watch you'll rock with everything, a pocket watch that adds something individual to each of your looks, a batik scarf you picked up on your travels -- whatever, as long as it breaks the mold.
Embrace pattern
We recently featured an article on stripes, a fashion trend we're seeing from runway to retail. We like this trend because even an amateur can pull off stripes -- they're democratic and generally flattering. But the summer also offers a wide range of prints that suggests you've vacationed in the farthest corners of the earth (even if you haven't left the city in years).
Tip: For the beginner, a paisely-print pocket square can replace your solids. For the trend-driven guy, batik is about to blow up.
No flip-flops in the city
